Good news!
John Lott reports that permits to carry concealed are way up. They've increased by 10% in the last year, and 48% over the last five years, despite the fact that 21 states now have no permit requirement and thus do not report their numbers.
I've had a theory: the US was always a nation of gunnies. The experience of the 60s (three assassinations, more attempts, riots and skyrocketing crime) was enough to depress this, but 50 years later we are returning to the norm.

As Massad Ayoob says, a firearm, readily to hand, is a piece of safety equipment, just as a fire extinguisher, IFAK, or life jacket would be. These are all something used to deal with a problem until a professional shows up. IF one shows up. As more people learn about the Fergusson effect, defunding police, non-enforcement of "minor" offenses, and the "catch and release" programs, they come to realize a universal truth. WE are the real "first responders", the intended victim is always the first one on the scene.
Sadly, carry permits are the same kind of sick joke as gun free zones. Criminals don't pay much attention to either one.
The CCW permits made a little sense when the laws were enforced impartially, since a "prohibited person" could be jailed for the violation. Since there is no effective law enforcement, especially in "Blue" cities and states, the CCW permit system is just a weapon to be used against the "Deplorables".
