I can remember a day when "vigilantes" meant members of a mob, attacking an individual. Under the current NewSpeak, it means an individual defending himself against members of a mob.
War is peace, freedom is slavery, victims are perpetrators....

Vigilante used to mean a person who took the law into their own hand by eliminating criminals set free by the Courts on technicalities. The Punisher, Green Arrow, Paul Kersey, and a few other movie characters.
I wonder if any of these morons know the term "vigilante" came from the Committee of Vigilance formed during the gold rush...in San Francisco.
Vigilantism flourished on the frontier where the mechanisms of criminal justice had not yet reached, or in places where the courts are perceived as corrupt or ineffective. Nowadays the left influenced by the mainstream media (or the other way around) has conflated vigilantism with self defense. If you're prepared to defend yourself, you're a vigilante. No, if you use a firearm to defend yourself, it's self defense. If you capture a perpetrator and hang him from a light post, you're a vigilante. Sadly, the catch-and-release policy now employed by leftist DAs in Democratic-controlled cities is pushing us to the point that we are on the verge of seeing a resurgence of true vigilantism.
Don't forget, free speech is assault and assault is free speech; depending on your political affiliation, of course.
