...Also a tactician & strategist of the 1st order. "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" and "Rope a Dope" are The Champ's two phrases I've always remember....and used.
Content of character vs color of skin.
Too bad that concept has gone by the wayside today.
ALL of the above comments are spot on.
While tilting against the status quo "Cassius Clay, then Muhammad Ali" brought himself to front and center of the spotlight. Brash with the skill to back up the banter.
I saw on a documentary that he saw the wrestler Gorgeous George taunt the crowd with 'ain't I beautiful' type showmanship.
Cassius...then Ali, played this to an art form.
Thanks for that.
Cassius Clay, then Muhammad Ali. I remember when he changed his name and didn't let public opinion stop him. Not only did he speak out against the Vietnam war, but he had the balls to put his career and freedom on the line. All the while proclaiming "I am the greatest"!
I went from thinking he was un-American and a braggart to truly admiring him as a man and as a boxer. The letter shows me he was a good judge of character as well.
"Teddy" was a lying felonious P.O.S. and so are most of those who have followed him into power.
