« "Why Is The Oil Industry Giving Millions To The NRA?" | Main | Texas isn't safe for purse-snatchers, updated »

Ah, the press of the bad old days!

Posted by David Hardy · 1 May 2014 09:01 AM

Story: at the NRA convention, a sheriff tells the story of a janitor who was attacked by three thugs.

"He was being savagely beaten by three suspects, one wielding a small club," Clarke said. "He told me afterwards he thought he was going to die. He was able to pull his firearm from its holster and deliver two shots, killing two of the suspects and saving his own life."

(I might add that, according to the article linked in the story, the county prosecutor found that he had acted out of reasonable fear of death or great bodily injury).

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel runs the story under this headline: "NRA crowd cheered story of Milwaukee janitor killing two teens."

I think that the Janitor acted appropriately. 3 on 1 plus a bat, gave the janitor reason to believe his life was in danger. It is always sad to hear about people dying from being shot, however, the two guys shot put themselves in the situation by attacking the man.

I'm surprised that the headline wasn't
"NRA cheers murdering janitor for blasting two innocent teenage choir boys with magnum assault weapon as they were saving his life."

Although I feel as though the Janitor in this story was right to pull his gun and shoot the two attackers, I am a little concerned that people were cheering about this, afterall, two people died from the incident. I know that a lot of people will say that they had it coming, and it is karmma, which I am fine with, however, death is still a terrible thing.

If we can't cheer when the good guys win, we are well and truly lost. Bad guys dying is NOT a terrible thing. It is a very good thing. Get your head right, sheesh.

That said, a few points:

1) Good shootin'. Two for two dead right there is about the best defenseive pistol use I've seen.

2) Why was the third participant not charged with murder? She was party to a felony that resulted in the death of other participants. Here in WI, the DA could have (should have) charged her under that statute, but didn't. She must have recently joined a choir and turned her life around.
