5.56 NATO VS. .223 Remington chambers
Via reader Mac Cox comes this post on the differences. I've fired both in my AR-15 without problems, but the post says this is not advisable.

A lot of heat but not much light. I have yet to see a commercially made AR with a .223 barrel. All mine and the others I’ve seen are marked 5.56; so you can safely run either.
The lower receiver on my vintage Colt AR-15 A2 says Cal..223 and the barrel says 5.56 NATO.
I have a .223 Wylde chamber on my Rock River Arms LAR-15, which is specifically intended to handle both 5.56mm as well as .223 ammo.
Works fine, and I suspect other manufacturers are doing something similar whether they are very public about it or not.
The article is largely correct although some points are a bit misexplained.
Chris, many "target" ARs have .223 Rem chambers and I have seen at least one manuf mark a barrel 5.56mm when it had a .223 Rem chamber.
The comments section over there made my brain hurt.
