Gun scare in northern CA

Posted by David Hardy · 1 May 2012 09:49 AM

"The CHP, Twin Cities and Mill Valley police, and the Marin County Sheriff’s Office responded" to two teens carrying airsoft rifles. The kids were "released to their guardians," implying they were arrested, and the police "took the rifles for safekeeping."

I can understand people calling 911 over this. The kids were on a public highway, carrying what looked like real firearms. Not a smart move on their part, legal or not.

I'm a little confused as to what they were detained for and why their toys were taken from them. Perhaps there is some ordinance, or perhaps the police overstepped. There is not enough information in that article to tell much of anything.

In the late 60s and early 70s my friends and I walked through the town carrying real guns on the way to the range, including pistols (holstered obviously) in the PRK. Times have changed.

The story doesn't really give a lot of detail. It's hard to judge without knowing the teens' intent. There have been dozens of local cases of teens in this area getting into camo, hiding out on hills and shooting BB's at drivers going down the Interstate or on busy roads. In some cases, it's caused windshields to crack and fear alone has caused drivers to crash. I'm all for taking an Airsoft rifle to target practice, but if it's suspected they were planning to shoot at cars or people, they deserve the punishment they get.

The article says someone called 911 because they saw one of the teens wearing camo and carrying a "rifle bag." Who are these paranoid freaks? This kid's next airsoft rifle should be an AK folder, so that he can carry it in a tennis racquet bag. Then he needs to learn what real camouflage is. I'm sure the gun-fearing liberals would feel so much safer if these boys stopped playing soldier and started playing urban sniper.
