Legal guns in DC

Posted by David Hardy · 16 July 2009 09:18 PM

Story here. After a year of legal registration, none of the firearms has been used in a criminal offense and, for that matter, none in a self defense incident.

Not reported as having been used in a self-defense incident.

Lots of gun-crime in and around DC. No telling from the data available how often guns are used in self-defense. Few are stupid enough to walk into that trap; of those who might have, they would have been labeled as criminals. Better to go looking for data of the # of people accused of gun-related crimes that protest that they only used the gun in self-defense.

What? Where is the blood running in the streets? Where are the wild west-style shootouts? Where are the incidents of hot lead slinging in the grocery store checkout line or highway on-ramps? I was promised all kinds of exciting action and the deaths of thousands of innocents once guns were made legal in D.C.! Where is the mayhem? (And by that I mean NEW mayhem caused by the legalization of guns, not the standard OLD mayhem that already existed with illegal guns).

Only 512 handguns registered after 12 months. Over 2,000 "illegal" handguns seized.

I'd like to see a full accounting all registration applications cross-indexed against all seizures.

But then, I'm a naturally suspicious kinda guy...

Not a big suprise really. But it is nice to see the numbers.
