Britain: mandatory jail time for carrying a knife?

Story here, with a note that presently 17% of those found with a knife get jail time.

well sure, why would you really enforce a stupid law?

that might actually prove that nothing they're trying to do is reducing crime.

we can't let our politicians lose face! someone might die.

They've raised the age to purchase a knife from 16 to 18. Is that not the ultimate proof of their insanity?

He urged police to exercise "common sense" by not prosecuting people carrying penknives for angling, or for bringing home kitchen or garden equipment from the shops.

And who in their right mind would count on cops using common sense when so much is on the line? Giving cops this kind of discretion is begging for abuse. Indeed, it sounds like they want to give cops a way to vent their anger on innocent people.
