Move to allow carry in parks & refuges

Posted by David Hardy · 19 December 2007 08:58 AM

Montana US Senators Baccus and Tester have sent the Interior Secretary a letter, asking him to allow transportation and carry of firearms in federal parks and wildlife refuges, in accord with State law.

“…other guns can already be transported, as long as their inaccessible…”

Their? Seriously? Is this the result of public education? Sorry, it’s a pet peeve of mine.

“…One of our major concerns is that folks who have ready access to them infrequently - more than we like to see, though - use them on park wildlife…”

Well, how about you prohibit that then. The vast majority of us would never dream of randomly killing animals.

You can't prevent idiots from ignoring the law, but that's not an excuse to burden or endanger the law-abiding and deny their god-given (and constitutional) rights to keep and bear arms for their own defense.

If some yob is stupid enough to kill a moose or bear in the park just because he happens to have a gun handy, prosecute him for hunting out of season or without a license...we have laws on the books for that.

Yes! Forty-seven senators signed on to that letter....that's darned near half of them! Including 8 Democrats. Looking good.

The people who will poach are probably not going to be dissuaded by a law making it illegal to carry in a National Park. This just gives the NPS an excuse to do shoddy police work and not actually stop poachers - they can harass citizens instead, and call it poaching abatement.
