England's gun crisis

Here we have an interesting series of events:

1) Ban guns, and by proxy remove crime deterrent.

2) Crime increases as criminals are emboldened.

3) Government resources are swamped, reducing arrest and incarceration rates.

4) Loop back to #2 and repeat indefinitely.

Were there any valid statistics on self defense use of firearms in the U.K. before Dunblane (sp?)
