Some useful tests on suppressors
Right here. So much for being "silencers"-- only the suppressed .22 rimfire has a report below the level of "threshold of pain." With everything bigger, you'd be well advised to wear hearing protection.
I was just coming of age, as it were, in the late 1960s, when hearing protection became popular. Most shooters older than I were pretty hard of hearing. I remember one NRA committee meeting, circa 1985, when one member had to take a break to replace his hearing aid batteries, and several others said they'd do the same. Harlon Carter remarked, "Dave, this his got to be the deafest Board of Directors of any major corporation." I once heard a joke about Elmer Keith's silenced .44 Magnum. It was only silent to him....
Just for the record;
When given the choice of calling it a "suppressor" v a "silencer";
Although suppressor is a better description;
Legally speaking it is a silencer.
