Civil Rights Movement and arms

I'm reading A most interesting book, Pure Fire: Self-Defense as Activism in the Civil Rights Era, released by the U of Georgia Press. One of the points made is that the plaintiff in the keystone case of Brown v. School Board had draw his revolver and shoot a segregationist in self-defense.
