How did this guy wind up on the Libertarian ticket?

Posted by David Hardy · 15 August 2016 01:07 PM

Bill Weld, Libertarian VP candidate, interviewed on gun laws:

"The five shot rifle, that's a standard military rifle; the problem is if you attach a clip to it so it can fire more shells and if you remove the pin so that it becomes an automatic weapon, and those are independent criminal offenses. That is when they become, essentially a weapon of mass destruction. The problem with handguns probably is even worse than the problem of the AR15."

With an incoherence like that, how did he wind up on any ticket?

Wow, I don't know what to say. I guess because he is a former governor of Massachusetts it is understandable, but...

I thought I was a libertarian, but I was confused. I guess I am a republican after all.

I just don't understand how those that know nothing can hate; what they don't know, so deeply.

And, that solves my dilemma as to whether I was going to waste my vote, by voting libertarian based upon principle.

I guess I will hold me nose and vote for Trump.

Remember the Independence Party?

After Jesse Ventura won as MN Governor in 1998, they tried developing a third party here. Except they never had a coherent set of policies and principles. The "Independence Party" is (barely) holding on by running known, but loser former Democrat and Liberal Republican politicians for governor every 4 years, and attracting about 5% of the electorate that say "Pox on both your houses." (Just enough to qualify for the ballot and the $$$ subsidies.)

Looks like the "Libertarian Party" decided on the same strategy in an attempt to get some traction and electoral interest. Too bad they disavowed every principle with these non-libertarian candidates. But! They have NAME Recognition!

(Have you seen Gary Johnson's unprincipled abdication of Religious Freedom?)

Which is why I won't be voting for the Libertarian ticket, despite being a registered Libertarian....

The Lib party has a unique ability to find the most outrageous candidates....

Anonymous | August 16, 2016 12:30 PM | Reply

at the risk of sounding snarky, Dave, have you been working in the LP so you could have been on the ticket instead?

Flight-ER-Doc | August 16, 2016 12:53 PM | Reply

Weld is at heart a centrist east-coast democrat, and I can't imagine why Johnson picked him.

But Weld is so incoherent I will not be voting Libertarian - despite being a registered Lib.

Johnson needs to boot Weld immediately, and pick almost anyone else.. who actually has some libertarian ideals.

The LP was afraid it might win the election and have to actually govern, so it picked the worst candidates it could find as protection against that happening.

Consolation: maybe the Libertarian ticket will take votes from Clinton, i.e., Dems who can't bring themselves to vote for her, and see some familiar pandering in the Johnson/Weld "bloviations".

Weld is the VP candidate. Gary Johnson in interviews has stated that he is of the mindset that if we outlaw guns, then only outlaws will have guns.

I have long thought that Johnson was nothing more than a butt-hurt republican taking advantage of gullible libertarians. This campaign season confirmed it. Come on Sweet Meteor of Death!

Johnson has demonstrated such appalling judgement in picking the democrat Weld that he has forfeited the race

Here is an op-ed by Weld regarding his stance on the 2d
Amendment. http://www.redstate.com/williamweld/2016/08/31/op-ed-defending-constitution-semi-automatic-firearms/

It is not perfect as he fails to recognize the potential that Federal law heavily regulating fully automatic weapons might be unconstitutional. However, it is far better than HRC and who knows WTF Trump would actually do.

Too bad the editorial completely evades addressing the outrageous statements that Weld made earlier. That tells me everything I need to know about trusting Weld on gun policy.
