Maybe NYPD needs some marksmanship training....

Posted by David Hardy · 7 September 2015 11:04 PM

84 shots, one hit (in the calf) on a bad guy. Also noteworthy: at age 27, the perp had 12 prior arrests, including ones for armed robbery. The experiment in having gun laws that make it safe even with known violent criminals on the loose does not appear to be succeeding. Surprise.

Well at least they didn't kill anyone.

Perhaps the question should be how many hours of firearm training has a LEO received in the at 12 calendar months?

I'm not new to firearms but in the same period of time I have received 28 hours. With a certified firearms instructor. Using my own ammo. Paid for out of my own pocket. And in the coming week will be another 12 hours.

So how do I, an ordinary citizen, compare to the 'average' badge? Perhaps we need to force the issue or at least develop a data base of LEO compared to Avg Joe citizen with respect to number of hours of formal training received.

The issue is an important tool when battling the gun grabbers who say they don't want a society with guns. They will be surprised to know that some/many/most? gun owners are at least as trained as the LEO.

14# trigger doesn't help much.

I remember reading about police shooting the guns in holsters before they got it out and the like. It is not target shooting they want to make sure it doesn't go off accidentally but I am sure a better compromise could be found

Agree with anon. Purposely making their triggers worse is a terrible idea. Thought I don't recall it being quite as high as 14 pounds.

So where did the other 83 shots go???

Dave D. | September 8, 2015 7:45 PM | Reply

...It would appear to be the difference between pointing a pistol and aiming a pistol before firing. Whatever it is, it's NOT marksmanship.

....In 1962 a four man NYPD pistol team shot a perfect 1200 in a bullseye match at Washington D.C. It's never been done before or, I think, since. Frank May,a NYPD Detective was one of them. I saw Frank at the Police PPC nationals in Jackson , Ms in the mid 70's. What a thrill.

...if NYPD are bad shots, it's political, not congenital. They used to be the guys to beat.

If i'm not mistaken, most police officers only do range shooting once a year for their qualifications. Heard of some CO's going so long that they lost their credentials to carry, sheriffs, and chiefs mostly.

.....You are mistaken.
