At least if this article is correct.

For what it's worth, the price on .22 long rifle dropped $5.00 a box of 500 since last night on one of the big internet sellers.

Actually saw a dozen boxes of Remington Thunderbolts in my local Wal-Mart over the weekend.

all too simplistic and it glosses over some of the reasons that the shortage exists? Gov’t conspiracy? Probably not, but are .gov purchases putting artificial pressure on the ammunition market? Without question. Consumer hoarding? Probably not entirely, but is hoarding putting artificial pressure on the market? Certainly. Increases shooters? Far, far less than NSSF, NRA and any other so called advocacy group would have you believe. When you teach a class, 5-10 percent follow up that class with more training. Of that subset, maybe 10% follow that up with regular practice and go on to “beyond NRA” training.

There is no “one reason’ for the shortage. Political fear? Definitely contributed starting in late 2008 through about 2011. Not long after, Newtown renewed this artificial pressure which never fully subsided. As a result, some manufacturers started focusing on specific calibers. Did this cause the great shortage? no. did it contribute? Without question.

So not one of these reasons can alone be scrutinized and critically evaluated and be determined to be causative. However, in a dynamic analysis when combined together they cannot be dismissed as not contributing.

I am pretty much a small bore target shooter, not very good, so .22lr standard velocity is my choice. I used CCI for a lot of my shooting. It is very accurate for my ability and was reasonably priced. The last case I bought 2 -2.5 years ago was $235 plus shipping. I have not seen a case of CCI standard since then. SK Jagd Standard Plus was about $350 plus shipping about then. I saw it a few months ago for $585 plus shipping but it was gone in hours after the email posted. I did not see the email in time. Eley Target was about $425 now it is at least $600. And these are places that supply the target market and so are not trying to gouge. I have seen at some places a case of Eley target listed for $995 and even higher.
Are the serious small bore target shooters hoarding, maybe but CCI standard?
I am hoping that things ease up so I can get some SK as I am almost out of what I have on hand and buying by the box is not practical.\

The comments following the Motley Fool article are hilariously retarded. It seems reasonable to predict that the readers of a website dedicated to helping people better invest their money would tend to be of above-average intelligence. Stupid people tend to be poor, and have no money to invest. The Motley Fool attracts people who (a) have at least a little bit of money, and (b) are motivated to learn more and grow their wealth. I would have expected an intelligent discourse. But no. I had to stop reading the comments after a while because I could feel my brain cells flickering out.
