Safety first: always be conscious of what is downrange
And the downrange is very long, when shooting a 105mm howitzer.
I have to wonder what type of arrangements they had, with houses three miles downrange, apparently on flat ground -- a .50 BMG will travel upwards of three miles, and a 172 gr. 30-06 around two miles, if I recall correctly.

A similar thing happened on Mythbusters. They were firing an old cannon at a brick wall backed up by a hillside at the Alameda county bomb range. It ricocheted up off the hillside and over into somebody's house. It seems there are a few people in possession of cannon that don't understand how far the shell can go after hitting the ground.
50 BMG has enough power to kill at 7 miles. There was an incident similar to this one at a range, I think it was in Penn., in the 1990 era.
50 BMG rifle on tripod was left pointing up at a 45 angle, and there was a round in the chamber. Curious child walks over and pulls the trigger.
7 miles away a 50 BMG round comes through the concrete block wall of a small store. Nobody hurt.
Well, I guess the homeowner should be thankful it was not a live round.
Depends on the charge used and quadrant. On an M101A1 with charge 7 you can get over 11km max range.
