A very good deal, I'd say.

"The Tommy Guns are generally illegal, but, in this case, the pair was registered during a one-month amnesty period and thus allowed to be sold to collectors."

Hmm. Very convenient timing. Laws for thee, but not for me?

Tommy Guns are not all illegal, just the ones that are not registered. Then the govt. closes the registration thus by causing prices to jump through the roof. The average Joe six pack is priced out of the market. A interesting case could be made that the whole scheme where the govt. has closed the registration is unconstitutional. If they could do it with Tommy Guns what would keep them from doing it to any group of weapons??? Probably more people are shot with 22 pistols than any other weapon. Could the powers to be require the registration on 22's then close the registry for any new 22's???? Would this sort of action pass review by our political motivated courts??? Just some random thoughts.

The sheriff was very responsible. William Schatzman sent letters to many dealers offering the trade, then he picked the one that provided the best deal, costing the taxpayers nothing. We should have more people like that in government. Good for Forsyth County, North Carolina! Everything about this story is a win-win.

The amnesty referred to was in 1968. No differential enforcement involved.
