MSI sues Maryland Police over permit delays

Posted by David Hardy · 11 May 2013 12:00 PM

Maryland Shall Issue has filed a lawsuit against the State Police. The gist of it is that the police are taking an average of 55 days to issue permits, while the statutory command is that they do so within 7 days.

Sadly, its not even permits. The Maryland State Police must conduct a background check for pistols or "assault" rifles in MD, so the 55 days is the wait time between purchase and when you can take possession of the firearm.

Similar in Massachusetts. The law requires police to approve or deny license applications within 40 days. Most towns currently take at at least 60 days to do so, in a few instances as much as 8 months.

In NJ, the "instant background check" before buying any gun is currently taking three weeks.

I've waited 48 days for the pistol I purchased over two months ago. My FFL called just a minute ago to let me know it was being released.
