Hmm... Mark Kelly bought an AR-15 and high cap magazines

Posted by David Hardy · 10 March 2013 09:22 PM

Here in Tucson, just a day after testifying against them in Colorado. He must live on this (eastern) end of town... the dealer where he bought it is not far away.

He also picked up a 1911. Our tastes are similar -- admit it, Mark, you want this sort of stuff!

UPDATE: I don't see his statement as "I bought the rifle so I could turn it over to police," but as "I bought the rifle, and seeing as it's become an issue, I'll turn it over to the police, drat!"

Questions from the defense bar:

1. Is Kelly a resident of Texas or Arizona?

2. Is he turning in the 1911 as well? If not, why not as the pistol used on his wife was opertionally the same as his 1911.

3. What other firearms has he purchased and when?

4. If he purchased the AR-15 to turn it in, then why no media press release before the fact? Why does this smell like a cover story once the news of Kelly buying the AR hit the net?

Sebastian suggests that under AZ law the Tucson PD would have to release the gun to sell on the open market.

In terms of the pistol -- functionally the same as the weapon the crazy man used to shoot his wife (though of a more powerful caliber -- Gabby may not have survived a similar hit from a .45), and there are extended capacity mags available for it. Just like for the gun the crazy man used.

I know you mean normal capacity magazines. The enemies of liberty have soaked our language with little lies, so much so that we find ourselves speaking them without even knowing it.

Wayne, for the 1911, 7 or 8 rounds IS a "normal capacity" magazine..:-) But you can get longer ones if you want, of course.

If he was buying the AR with the intent to turn it over to someone else, even if that someone else was the police department doesn't that make him a straw purchaser?

Upon further reflection, I guess he might not be...but....

Heh. So he burns $2k or more to turn the weapon in?

On his USAF pension, I guess.

Now, when in USAF, I expect he fired M16's "for familiarization". Not like this is a total experiment for the man.

He probably should have stuck to flying, instead of going into politics with a trophy wife.

Some of you don't understand. The law should not apply to the anointed ones. After all, they are more equal than the rest of us proletariat.

Quick, someone alert DiFi. Clearly after what he's been through, he MUST be suffering from PTSD and should not be allowed to purchase firearms. (/sarc)

I like what Hartley had to say. Clearly he purchased the rifle to give to another party.
That is clearly a straw purchase in violation of federal law. Therefore, my question is: Why has he not been arrested & charged with the felony?
