Demo platform on firearms

Posted by David Hardy · 4 September 2012 09:36 AM

Guns and Money is reporting the 2012 Demo platform on guns:

"We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans’ Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements – like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole – so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few."

I'm going to quote a favorite commentator on the "..open national conversation..." line: "We had that conversation, and your side lost".

Sadly, what they REALLY mean by "conversation" is "you bitter clingers need to do what we tell you".

To paraphrase Dave Petzal: Common sense dies an agonizing death when Government gets involved.

"We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious."

Yeah...even more limited and precious since Obamacare will ensure that a lot more of us don't make it to the cradle, and a lot of us over 60 will get a handful of pain pills instead of needed procedures and other rationed care from our friendly neighborhood Death Panel.

And double dittos on the comment that we've already had the "conversation" on guns, and we won.

Now, How about a national conversation on healthcare rather than an incomprehensible one-party multi thousand page long solution forced on us by a bloody-minded Congress using improper procedures and upheld by one rogue supreme court justice...a black-robed tyrant at that?

"...and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements – like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole." And that my friends is reasonable regulation.Do they not understand the words "shall not be infringed"? From my word thesaurus--transitive and intransitive verb to take over land, rights, privileges, or activities that belong to somebody else, especially in a minor or gradual way

The Democrats writing the platform are really very smart! They know that banning assault weapons will stop criminals from using them. It's just "commonsense" that bad guys will follow the law. What the President needs to do is tell the gang-bangers that any unlawful use of evil looking non-military guns will result in an immediate expulsion from their gang because they have been under "double secret probation" since the beginning of his first term. There, wasn't that "reasonable"? Dean Wormer would be so proud.

Anyone else notice that whenever a politician uses the word "commonsense" it means that he has no data/facts to back up the effectiveness of his proposal?

Will they next be stupid enough to come out against bibles? Oh, wait...

The thing is that this is one of those issues where no matter what the political group says half will be in favor of what is said and half will be adamantly opposed.

Bottom line to me, and I've been arguing this with my grandfather as of late because he's a firm believer in the political ads with citations tell the truth , you can listen to what they say and more importantly, the twist the media puts on things, and unless you're doing your own fact checking to see what was really intended vs. how the media's portrayed it, you shouldn't make any final judgments.

Well informed judgements can be made by relying more direclty on period historical information. Try this short article, "The American Revolutionary Era Origin of the Second Amendment's Clauses."

IIRC, 745 deaths occurred in 2011 due to long guns, to include "assault weapons". More people died from being beaten to death by another person using bare hands by 30% of this number, even more still from the use of knives. mMre people died of excess exposure to oxygen-dihydride (H2O) than died from any cause related to any firearm.

Democrats are not using common sense if they seek to prevent death. Water and hands should be banned before "assault weapons".

Would getting into a car with a known rapist be OK as long as he assures you that "he only wants a little kiss", we KNOW how the Dems feel about our guns, they have repeatedly let it be know they want 'em all turned in.
But they assure us, all they want is a little kiss...
