Obama statement on gun control

Posted by David Hardy · 13 March 2011 01:02 PM

Hot local news here.

Brady Campaign must be dosing up on antidepressants again. His proposals are essentially ... make background checks better and faster. Topped with:

"Now, like the majority of Americans, I believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. And the courts have settled that as the law of the land. In this country, we have a strong tradition of gun ownership that's handed from generation to generation. Hunting and shooting are part of our national heritage. And, in fact, my administration has not curtailed the rights of gun owners - it has expanded them, including allowing people to carry their guns in national parks and wildlife refuges."

The most comfort they can take is a careful hint at requiring background checks on private sales -- but even there you have to read very, very, carefully to see the hint. Or try this:

"Some will say that anything short of the most sweeping anti-gun legislation is a capitulation to the gun lobby. Others will predictably cast any discussion as the opening salvo in a wild-eyed scheme to take away everybody's guns."

I wouldn't take any of this as genuine, but I doubt Brady Campaign had this result in mind when it endorsed the Obama/Biden ticket!

He's using the sophisticated collective rights interpretation of "individual right". He means that individuals have a right to keep and bear arms with the permission of their state government while enrolled in the state militia. Even those on our side use the "individual right" phrase, not realizing that it gives cover to our opponents. It would be nice if we could get an alternate phrase to catch on, like "militia independent right" or "self-defense right" or something. But "Self-defense right" would probably just get twisted to mean self-defense of the people collectively, while enrolled in the militia, against the federal government. With their interpretations of the Second Amendment, they've already demonstrated their willingness to use such twisted definitions.

>>> And in the attack's turbulent wake, Americans by and large rightly refrained from finger-pointing, assigning blame or playing politics with other people's pain.

Who in the billy hell does he think he's kidding with this pile of s###?

What Critic said and CDR - he is snowing all the professional politician rino's who will then fall in line with his agenda. There are large numbers of people out there who think that there is something called reasonable gun control laws and that they government has no interest in taking anyone's gun away. This makes him seem reasonable and okay. He is planning for 2012

Yes, he's planning for 2012, but we can take solace in that.
The Dems never quite catch on that pushing gun control, even if it's the so-called "reasonable" gun control, is a losing proposition nowadays.

Nevertheless, you can count on the upcoming gun control campaigns to focus on closing the "gun show loophole," based on this from the article:

"We should provide an instant, accurate, comprehensive and consistent system for background checks to sellers who want to do the right thing..."

No not the "Gun Show Loophole" the "Private Sale Loophole" they just call it the "Gun Show Loophole" to lie about what they are after. All sales going through FFL's.

Yeah, because the background checks have done a lot so far. Background checks aren't going to solve anything beyond interfering with the rights of the law-abiding citizens. Let's take that background-check money and do something useful like educating people about the use and safety of guns.

Does he realize it is called an "instant" background check? It only takes a few minutes already. Just goes to show that it is smoke and mirrors.
