Shooting is a dignified sport
The points are counted, and if you didn't qualify, you case your guns, pack your range bag, and join the spectators. In other sports, it's not so dignified.
We had a joke going around, regarding what would be the Camp Perry equivalent of Europe's soccer holliganism. We figured it would be something like: a couple of Marines whisper "semper fi" too loudly after a Marine competitor makes a good shot, and cease after other spectators give them looks of disapproval.

I'm thinking of a Heinlein quote right now:)
I think the equivelent would look like WWIII, your scenario would be more appropriately called an analog...
Perhaps I need to make a trip to Camp Perry, and avoid doing so many club-level USPSA matches, where my primary rule is: "Don't shoot with your friends."
Hey...everybody at the match is polite for good reason...because they know everybody else at the match is armed. :-)

Let's not dump on weightlifting as a sport. A little solidarity between enthusiasts of various "non-mainstream" sports/activities is in order.
It takes a great deal of effort and discipline to shoot at a competitive level and to powerlift at a competitive level. And being non-mainstream, both shooting and powerlifting tends to cause squeamish people to get nervous for no good reason. So why dump on powerlifters?
Headline at video clip says it all: "21-year-old weightlifter tries to squat 1008 lbs. at Sr. nationals in Chicago; projectile vomits all
over judge, passes out."
