Assisted-opening knives protected by new statute

Posted by David Hardy · 31 October 2009 11:29 AM

Details here. Customs had moved to redefine "switchblades" to include assisted-opening knives that are banned from import; the bigger problem was that many State laws against switchblades incorporate the Customs regulations as their definition.

I think assisted knives do qualify as switchblades. I think the bigger picture was missed. This was a opportunity to get rid of the pointless laws banning switchblades.

My Benchmade 710 McHenry & Williams comes out of my pocket as fast as any switchblade (with less noise) and disappears into my pocket faster than a switchblade! Quiet, faster, one-handed operation, and safer 'cause there's no chance of it opening in my pocket. With performance like that from a regular folder, who would even want a switchblade?

If there ever was a valid reason for the ban (which I doubt) there no denying that its time is long gone. Toss the ban and make all folders legal. That's what should have happened.

i don't think banding knives based on there speed has any purpose. If anything this works against the Victim who draws their blade for self defense in a life or death situation.

Criminals dont follow laws! if they plan to kill someone with a blade. It will be a 17 inch knife concealed with in their sleeves.

Knives don't kill People, People kill People
