Another case of no tolerance no brains
A two-inch pocketknife is found in a student's locked car, so the school suspends him for five days, then increases that to twenty.

How about a lug wrench? Or a solid five-inch screw driver?
He should have told them he did not have any weapons. Which he did not have anyway. Never give consent to your vehicle being searched. If you carry into a so-called prohibited zone, never tell a living soul. It can come back to bite you.
The more I read and hear the more I can't believe. What is next eliminate pencils and pens, because you can be stabbed with them. what about rulers, shouldn't they be made out of rubber? the books can be used as a club, lets make them out of styrafome, etc.,etc. I remember when I was in school, it wasn't uncommom to bring a hunting rifle to school durring the season, and no one was ever shot, or clubbed with it. now we live in a paranoid country full of people who live in fear of life.
I carry two metal hoboes (knife, fork spoon sets) in my locked glove box. Notice that there are many parking lots barred to me though I am not a registered student at any school. It isn't just students though we need to speak for students now.
Remember that these are people who claim to be teaching judgement to children.
And, no, it's not a matter of "that's the law". They pushed these policies.
Once again we've got low-level bureaucrats attempting to hide behind a supposedly inflexible policy over which they have absolutely no control and no room for exercising any discretion. Once again, they're almost certainly lying. I haven't seen the particular regulation under which they're acting, but most of the ones I have seen neglect to explicitly list items that are deemed to be per se weapons under the policy. Those that do provide such a list that includes knives make exceptions for knives used for food service, shop and art classes, and similar non-violent uses. If knives aren't specified as being weapons per se under the policy, then the bureaucrat had to decide to treat it as one, despite its obvious failure to meet the dictionary definition as an item "used or intended to injure or destroy."
I see there are still the reasons teachers and social workers usually get red-lined in jury selections.
The Illinois State Police recommend a pocket knife in a winter survival kit for emergencies
Unless school adminstrator's can hide behind "Sovereign Immunity", it's never to late to, as Kristopher advised, "lawyer up".
Get one or two adminstrators or the districts paying out a good size judgement, and they'll acquire some judgement of their own.
Rule #1.
Do not talk to "authorities" without a lawyer being present.
If he had lawyered up immediately, the school would have probably backed down at near light speed.
Because he was honest with these bedwetters, his future career is now in jeopardy.
