Gun and ammo sales
In the last three months of 2008, that's right, three months, Americans bought enough guns to outfit the Chinese and Indian armies, combined. Actually, that's just reflective of the NICS checks, which don't cover sales by private parties, and buys by CCW permit holders. There were also 1.5 BILLION rounds of ammo sold, which explains why I'm having trouble finding .45 ACP lately.
Hat tip to reader Joe Olson, who also points out that a large share of those firearm sales were of "assault rifles," which means it'll be hard to argue that they don't meet the Heller test of arms "in common use."
UPDATE: Here's a link to some pdfs breaking down background checks by year, State, and State rate per capita.

Even DCM is backed up with orders for '06 ammunition.
".30-06 LIMIT - 10 CANS TOTAL PER YEAR - Effective 10 April 2009. .30-06 LIMIT - 10 CANS TOTAL PER YEAR - Effective 10 April 2009."
That 1.5 billion rounds of ammo sold was based on the assumption that for every NICS check called in in November, there was a 1,000-round case of ammo sold. Kinda weak.
So, is this panic or foresight?
I was going to post this article on another site but without any citations in the article to back up the figures I decided not to post it.
David, with all due respect and believe me there's far more due than I have words to make that point clear.
I have been following this ammo thing very closely and have read everything I can get my hands on. Say nothing that I have an advantage of knowing a bit of what goes on, on the inside of a few of the largest producers of ammo in the US. Being said, I will not debate anyone on any reason that is supported or based on sales of that ammo in short supply to the free markets by supply and demand. I will demand and have many times and no one will give me an answer that is supported with facts: Where is all the Russian ammo? There is no Wolf, Hot Shot and Golden Tiger and the likes on the market. Try and find 7.62X39 for sale that doesn't cost more per M than the firearm itself.
The simple fact that imported ammo is no where to be found and Obama wants to ban reloading through the treaty scam. Supports that something is fishy in the area of ammo supplies.
Look at it like this, is ammo that is needed for self defense only for people whom have money?
btw/ anyone notice the prices on 00 buck at over a buck a round by the box and thats on sale.
I'm not going to play into this demeanor that we should be proud of ourselves because we are armed to the teeth. I want our folks that have a voice that is heard to demand that China ammo be allowed back on the markets to fill a needed gap in supply.
That is a good question. I wonder where the Russian ammo went.
Just try and find pistol primers.
The NICS data conclusions are a bit inaccurate. For one the late 1999 spike was due to the Y2K scare not the 2000 Bush/Gore campaing. Secondly, NICS checks include states doing background on their CCW applicants. Kentucky's high numbers have been noticed before. Seems they must do frequent CCW permit holder re-checks.
This ammo drought is curious. I don't know the reason, but I do know when I went to my local Big 5 (to buy a pair of shoes) I looked over the counter at the ammo shelves.
Handgun ammo? Shelf empty. Not even .45 Colt or .44-40.
Rifle ammo? Very little. No .30-30, no .30-06, no .308, no .223. There were a few boxes of .22-250, .300 Win Mag, and a couple of other not so popular calibers.
I can't say there was any .22 rimfire, either, but the shotgun ammo seemed to be in reasonable quantity.
"The simple fact that imported ammo is no where to be found and Obama wants to ban reloading through the treaty scam."
proof? links? This is news to me.
Folks are buying any ammo, so why should imported ammo be plentiful?
Notice- even the CMP who has millions of rounds and doesn't make any- is having a huge run. Georgia Arms is having a run. Everyone, domestic, import, surplus USGI is selling anything they have, plus the makers are grabbing all the primers and components they can.
The Dallas Market Hall gun show normally has at least 3 to 4 sellers of reloading supplies. Last sunday, NONE. Didn't see any powder for sale, no primiers. The guy with all the bullets was still there. Saw US made 223 for $400 per $1000. Saw sky high prices for any black rifiles. All the ammo was expensive.
I looked on the net to buy some powder. Lots and lots of "Out of Stock".
If there is nothing wrong with the supply, except that it can't keep up with demand, this is an unpresidented buying binge. Are none of the Libs paying attenion? 6 months of fever pitched buying and no end in sight. Not just guns, and ammo but all the reloading supplies. Thats a lot of worried people. If I was in charge I would be worried and trying very hard to get these people happy.
Dan Hamilton makes a good point. I've seen it asserted (I don't know directly) that a lot of grownups behind the scenes in Washington, DC took rifle sales in the run-up to the AWB very seriously, and it led them to walk softly and slowly for a while (relatively). Now we seem to be putting the AWB run on guns to shame, and its hard to tell if the libs have any grown-ups left to do the math. Of course I didn't hear the AWB assertion until after the fact, so the same might apply now, but Obama, et al do not inspire confidence on the point.
W, you have to do your own reading and you can't do that with your head in the sand.
First off there is tons and I mean tons of reports that Obama is wanting to ban reloading. DO A WEB SEARCH!
Next there is no Wolf or other Russian ammo on the market. Check with Century, J & G sales or Center fire Systems. They don't have any and its killing them. These are some of the very first companies that get Russian ammo when it hits the docks. Call them as find out for yourself.
THERE HAS BEEN NO RUSSIAN AMMON IMPORTED INTO THIS COUNTRY FOR MANY MONTHS. WHY?????
THERE HAS BEEN NO RUSSIAN AMMON IMPORTED INTO THIS COUNTRY FOR MANY MONTHS. WHY?????
That is very simple the Russians are rearming getting ready to take back the buffer states. They are building up the supply of ammo that was sold off. Until the Russian government is satisfied with their supply of ammo no ammo will be allowed to be exported.
China is much the same thing. They know what Russia is doing and there are things that they want. So they are stockpilling ammo also.
Russia and China see a weak USA with a weak President and decide that NOW is the time to expand. With the US out of the picture, who is there to stop them?
Dan, I have heard this from a few sources and I have to wonder.
Being you bring up a weak president and we are on the blog of one of American's best legal minds in the area of topic. Have you seen that Obama's lawyers need more time to respond to Obama's citizenship questions. This is beyond intelligent conversation and reason. Clearly the guy is hiding something like he's not a natural born citizen and the legal system that has taking an oath to honor and up hold the United States Constitution is not doing its job. Which means this country needs a huge house cleaning to get back in order of government serving the citizens who pay the bills. This weak president is going to take this country down and its going to happen far sooner than what most folks have any ideal of.
A court fight on Obama would just be better as far a Russia and China are concerned. Whats Obama going to do? Threaten to go to the UN? I am sorry there were a lot of people that voted against Carter because they didn't know if he could press the button or not. Obama probly has had the button disconnected. The bad guys of the world see their chance. they would be stupid not to take it.
Obama would think twice about attacking another commies. But has different feeling about the American people who believe in freedom. Disagree see DHS report just released in the last 30 days. However his crew are having ACORN GPS every door in the US. My personal feeling on this is so when the order comes to take everyone's guns and ammo. If there's going to be a fire fight a quick call to the boys in the air will deliver a payload at the front door. For anyone that thinks this government will no burn to a crisp men, woman, children and families over them having legal firearms forgot about Waco.
We have address that have worked perfectly for hundreds of years. EMT, Fire and police have used these addresses without any problems and have never asked for a different system. Mail, FedEx, UPS, pizza and flower have been delivered using only address without any problems.
The simple truth is a government that lies to its people is not a government for the people.
I am writing a paper on the demand estimation and forecasting of ammunition, the direct relationship of Obama's election and the shortage of ammo. I am trying to establish that manufactures of ammo did not prepare for the surge in requests for ammo, and thus have created an artifical shortage with temporary increases in prices. The political factor of the threat of limiting access has a direct correlation, but why did the manufactures not see this? Any good articles or factual data to support this?
By command of the big SOB OB, without law, with out
any notice, just the SOB OB word. no more ammo.
how did the SOB OB do it. simply follow history, look at OB's track record.
Look at Kalifornia
No pistol ammo, No rifle ammo, try to find 22lr.
shelf is empty. warehouses are full. no truck loads.
what once was 5-10 cases delivered on request, now maybe one box of 20 rounds or maybe one box of 50.
silly fools run to china mart looking nothing.
MILITIA of Kalifornia ... anonymous coward.
Im an american i should be able to buy and use what ever weapon i choose! i should be able to shoot any ammo want from any counrty or manufacture and reimport our own military ammo our troops dont use. most of our leaders are cowards, they should be fighting for our rights but we are not important to them so here we are out of jobs and ammo with a huge limit on what weapons we do have
Yeah, I've been having difficulty with 45 acp too. I'm down to 60 rounds left, split between 4 manufacturers (MFS, Win, Rem, CCI). So frustrating not to be able to go shooting.
