NJ narrowly rejects additional gun laws

Posted by David Hardy · 24 February 2009 07:55 AM

Story here. From what I understand, to get a handgun in NJ you have to get a police-issued permit, which takes months to obtain. But this wasn't enough for some advocates, who wanted one-gun-a-month atop it. The measure passed the Assembly, and fell short in the Senate by a single vote.

They didn't technically reject the bill. The sponsor pulled it after some of the votes went up. Because it wasn't officially defeated, it could come back at any time. NJ residents need to keep calling - this issue won't go away just yet.

In theory getting a Pistol Purchase Permit or a Firearms ID in NJ is by law a 30 day process. It usually takes longer, sometimes a lot longer. A friend was just permitted a Permit; it took about 100 days.

Of course, in NJ you need a new Pistol Purchase Permit for each handgun you want to buy ... how long do you think permit #2 will take to process?
But you can apply for multiple permits at one time, so it is possible that somebody is being issued X permits at a clip. They expire after 90 days too.

I just received my paperwork to purchase 2 handguns in NJ. It took about 3 months to receive. I knew I was going to buy one, so I paid the extra $2 for a second.

I bought an S&W 22a last week - I also had to pay an extra $15 in state fees on top of sales tax, the $50 for the FID card and $4 for the pistol purchase permit.

What a great state. They also want to ban all .50 cal and above firearms - including black powder rifles and muskets.

The time it takes to get a pistol purchase permit in New Jersey also varies depending on where you live. In many small towns (& NJ has hundreds) you can get a permit in a matter of days. I once got one on the same day I applied. Because of the delays many would be gun owners apply for several permits at time. It usually depends on just how busy your local police are because issuing permits is a very low priority. Additionally it depends on the politics of your local chief. If your chief is pro-gun its good, if your chief is anti-gun you might as well move.

NJ yanked my chain for 10, 11 months. There is an appeals process for rejected permits, but permits for which no action has been taken are not rejected, and therefore the appeals process isn't valid. There's a statute that says they must cough up permit in 30 days, but a court case whose ruling is that it's in the interest of the state for the police to take as much time as they want to perform the background check.

Thus, a legal "safe zone" is created such that a chief can legally sit on a permit indefinitely, with no recourse.

Perhaps, once Heller is incorporated, all that will be done with.

If we're not fighting over who gets to eat the last head of lettuce in the valley, that is. ;)

How long it takes depends on (1) where you live and sometimes (2) who you know.

When I lived up there (first 35 years of my life), I mostly lived in rural parts of Northwestern NJ. When I applied for my pistol purchase permit on my way home from work one evening, I received a phone call the very next morning that it was ready. Less than 18 hours.

But I did hear stories of people taking months to get theirs.

It's been a little over 4 months now. It took 13 months to get my initial one, a couple of months to get my second one and now it seems to be getting longer.........I have called and they tell me it will be soon. It is very frustrating.
