Posted by David Hardy · 16 November 2008 12:52 PM

Wisconsin DOT report here in pdf. It notes deer are the third most commonly struck item, that collisions with deer killed 14 and seriously injured 100 in 2007.

I saw a chart at a state park many years ago showing that Bambi kills more people in North America than any other animal ... and it was a lot more. More than snakes, sharks, and spiders combined if I remember correctly (but don't quote me on that).

I believe the Hippo is the most dangerous animal in Africa.

I seem to remember reading that something like 60,000 deer are killed on the highways of PA each year.

There are times you've got to root for the deer:

Story tells about Gilbert Genn being attacked by a deer outside his house in Montgomery County, Maryland. Genn is now a lobbyist; he used to be in the Maryland State House. He was and is rabidly anti-RKBA.

I'd have given that deer a nice apple.

The man GAVE the news reporter that photo! And here is how it looked before the web site cropped it for some degree of decency:

In four years living in suburban Maryland, I got hit by two deer, hit in that they both kicked my truck. One as I was coming to a stop due to deer along the road and the other was more an impression of brown with white spots and then a thunk. The last one was fortunate as I was in traffic and had I hit him, it would have been ugly for both of us. As it was he ran off, hopefully wiser about traffic.

On the upside, many deer were saved after 9/11 when NIST in Gaithersburg closed their gates, thus keeping the deer off the roads in the neighborhood. Before then, every week there was a bloody carcass in the road as I drove to work.
