New VPC demand

Posted by David Hardy · 22 February 2008 01:27 PM

Continuing in its quest for relevancy, or at least media coverage, the Violence Policy Center proposes to require FFLs to notify universities if a student buys a firearm.

Hat tip to Joshua Berger...

Update: SayUncle points out that VPC swiped the idea from Brady Campaign.

Not that we can really expect the VPC to be rational, but how on earth would they expect this to even work? having FFLs send a list of all their purchasers to every institute of higher education in the world on a regular basis does not seem like something the FFLs or the schools would really appreciate.

Sounds like they're trying to discourage FFLs from selling to anyone who might be a student.

I suppose it wouldn't violate the VPC's standards to require registration of college students. Besides, a little education can be a dangerous thing. Maybe they can add a line to the 4473-- (c) are you a convicted felon?, (b) are you a fugitive from justice?, (c) are you enrolled in a university?

If an FFL looks up a prospective purchaser in a university's stduent directory and doesn't find that person listed, it means either

a) the person is not a student, or

b) the person is a student who has invoked the FERPA privacy block, or maybe

c) some error has occurred.

There are about 4,000 institutions of higher education in the US. They would all have to be checked because a person could be a student in an institution outside the state of residence. Even, after all this, not finding a person doesn't mean the person is not a student!

Oh, well. I guess that logic isn't the antis' strong suit.

Or maybe I underestimate them? Perhaps the law will be written to say that the gun can't be sold to people whether or not their names show up in the student directory? :-)

Like undergrads can afford guns.

How about public notification when a liberal policymaker/gungrabber/politician/celebrity purchases a weapon? Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander!
