DC's shortage of amici

Posted by David Hardy · 14 January 2008 12:39 PM

The NY Sun notices. DC is supported by five state AGs (the challengers have 30 lined up, last I heard, to support the 2nd Amendment), and 18 Congressmen (don't know the count, but I'd expect Parker/Heller to have 5-10x that many).

Their "scholars" brief was supported by two law profs and, what, 4-6 history profs.

UPDATE: lot of us have been wondering why there are so few. With AGs, it's easy: most of them are on the other side. With scholars, it's harder to call. One guess is that many historians may be chary of the Bellesiles affair, where they put their credibility on the line supporting his breathtaking new findings ... and were left holding the bag when it was exposed as bogus.

That's certainly encouraging. I know that A2A will put together a great brief, I hope that the others are of the same caliber. I'm anxiously awaiting February 4th.

Well, they got one of the big ones that count.... The DOJ...

Mark:

Note that the DoJ brief was filed in support of NEITHER party.

I too am anxious to see the respondent's brief. If it is anything like previous, it will be very tight indeed.

David, I am glad that some 30 state AGs are lined up. My last count was eight that have committed, and as reported in the news. They are: TX, AR, MT, MO, ID, MI, CO, VA. Here is hoping my tally is woefully underdone.

"Note that the DoJ brief was filed in support of NEITHER party."

...except that in effect it says, "it's an individual right but you can regulate it away, so send it back down for some less conspicuous court to muddy the waters and screw the good people of DC out of their God-given and Constitutionally protected rights".

It may not support either party but it sure as hell doesn't support the people or the Constitution either.

The DOJ brief in essence said, a right is a right but we want the power to regulate it out of existence everywhere but in theory.

Does anyone know where one can go about getting a copy of any of the amici briefs?
