Rock and rolling

Posted by David Hardy · 23 August 2007 09:17 AM

Danish troops in Afghanistan rock and roll with a recoiless rifle and a .50 M2. (I don't have time to look it up, but I think they're using a Swedish recoiless rifle.).

Nothing like a little gun porn.

Don't know much about the recoiless rifle, but it seems like when he's firing it his barrel drifts up and to the right, so there's probably *some* recoil.

Didn't notice that on the rocket launcher. Did notice it on what looked like an M16. That's the downside to shoulder fired full auto weapons; they recoil up and to the right. There are apparently two reasons for this: 1) given that most shooters are right handed, that is the path of least resistance; and 2) given that most barrels have a right hand rifled twist, the physics of the matter are that the bullet screaming down the barrel while turning to the right imparts an upward and rightward impulse on the weapon. I don't know why left hand twist isn't used more often in these types of weapons.

...how about two barrels with opposing twist?

The "M16" is a Diemaco C7A1, the Canadian copy of the American M16 that is also used by the Netherlands as well as Canada.
