Jesse Jackson plans protests for Aug. 28
From the "Rainbow Coalition" website: "Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr., founder and president of Rainbow PUSH Coalition, announced today he will organize a national day of protest in 25 cities on Aug. 28, 2007, to rally support for legislation to restrict gun sales."
I did get a chuckle from this. I suppose it would help if he knew something about the subject:
"The National Rifle Association, a powerful special-interest lobbying organization and chief proponent of lax rules for gun ownership, is promoting a federal bill that would, among other things, eliminate any limits on the quantities of guns an individual may purchase."

Clayton Cramer was on the spot with the real roots of gun control some time back.
I already think of 15 April as BAG (buy a gun) day.
So, I guess I will treat August 28th as a sort of 'Christmas in July' sort of duplicate holiday.
Someone remind me when the stay on the Parker decision expires. There just might be three 'Buy a Gun' days this year!
Pardon my racist attitude but why don't we try for a law that limits the number of illegitimate children race-poverty-pimps are allowed to have?
I see a lot of places reporting this "25 city protest" but I can't find any that are announcing which cities these are. I just got a mailing from CCRKBA asking gun owners to counterprotest, but it's a little hard to make plans without knowing where Jesse Claus is coming to town.
That's why I'm celebrating August 28, 2007 as National Buy-A-Gun Day: http://www.buyagunday.com
What better way to counter-protest Jesse Jackson than by doing what he hates the most?
Here's a copy of the comment I left over at Alphecca's place:
Here in Missouri we suspect there’s a reason he picked August 28th - that’s the day a new law goes into effect that, among other things, repeals our old Jim Crow law, the “Permit To Acquire”.
Enacted after the race riots in St. Louis around 1915, the law’s intent was to keep ‘the wrong people’ from getting handguns. Ever since then anyone wanting to acquire a conceable weapon (barrel 16″ or less) had to go to the Sherriff in their county, fill out a form and pay $10. If approved then you could get your gun. In modern times most counties made this as painless as possible issuing an ‘open PTA’ good for 30 days in a matter of minutes. Some counties (primarily around St. Louis & KC) made the process as onerous as possible, adding their own idiotic requirements on top of the law and using it to impose arbitrary waiting periods. Some counties would only issue a PTA if you told them in advance the make, model, and S/N of the weapon (generally the seller fills that in when they send the form back to the Sherriff). All of this was supposed to be done for any “transfer” - i.e., if you loaned your gun to your wife, you were technically supposed to get a PTA for that - and another one when she gave it back to you.
And yes, this has also been used as a back door gun registration scheme since even private transfers were supposed to get a PTA.
Note that the statute of limitations on this is 12 months so any gun you’ve had for a year is ok, as is any concealable gun you bought outside of Missouri (with current Federal laws that means the ones you had when you moved here). Also note that all the PTA did was let you buy the gun - didn’t show you still owned it, or that you could legally carry it (although some counties would demand that you carry a copy of your PTA to ‘prove’ you owned the gun).
All of this is gone August 28th. Gun stores across the state are stocking up on pistols (and sales are currently pretty flat). The ever-indulgent wife and I are buying at least one pistol (a G26 for her and something for me depending on funds & guns available).
Which is why August 28th is the day of this ‘protest’ - a law specifically intended to keep minorities disarmed and helpless is going away. Says a lot, doesn’t it?
