Google AdSense and firearms

Posted by David Hardy · 22 January 2007 11:30 AM

Google's ads have some interesting limitations. For one thing, Google won't let you run ads if your site features "Sales or promotion of weapons or ammunition". It's listed next to porn, illegal drugs, fake term papers, etc. One blogger has been banned simply because his blog discusses firearms. And, despite their policy statement, it turns out that they actually do accept porn sites. Anyone have a tip on advertising services that don't ban firearms-related sites?

Those rules aren't meant to be read strictly, as witness, for instance, the ban on "...advocacy against any group, individual, or organization". If read strictly, that would rule out almost all weblogs, and most of the rest of the web, too. They'd likely accept your website, if you applied -- it is, after all, much more about legal issues than about the guns themselves.

Google doesn't have a problem with terorists using their weapons to kill our men on the ground in Iraq in fact they are happy to help with the latest satellite images. British troops are contemplating suing Google http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/01/13/wgoogle13.xml
for injuries sustained as a result of aiding and abeting by sat. images published by Google.

I agree with the above commenter. However, I'd like to know exactly what the limits are. What can and can't you write about?

I don't sell a thing, but they definitely don't like me. I don't recall how they phrased it, but they basically said that my advocacy for the Second Amendment made me ineligable for GoogleAds.

Google, of course, will soon render itself irrelevant. Help them along by not accessing thier sites.

Any tips on what to use instead of Adsense?
