Satire meets reality

Posted by David Hardy · 14 August 2007 06:21 PM

American satire: company supposedly makes bulletproof school backpacks, which get an NRA endorsement.

British reality: parents really are buying school shirts made of kevlar, to protect their kids against stabbings.

"Teachers are also demanding to be equipped with stab-proof vests to protect them from attack as they frisk pupils for knives and guns."

Great. Wear a knife proof vest and all the perps will just go for your head.

I heard a radio talk show host (Mike McConnell) mention these backpacks. He said he had talked with some experts that determined that, in fact, books are really good at stopping handgun bullets. So you might just consider putting books in your kids book bag and telling them to use that as a shield.

I haven't tried shooting at books in a while, but I'm sure just about everyone has tried shooting up a phone book. I recall that rifle bullets will make it through.

Uh, Kevlar does NOT stop sharp pointed objects like knives, ice picks, arrows, etc. We had this rather graphicly demonstrated at a defense contractor I once worked for.

"Uh, Kevlar does NOT stop sharp pointed objects like knives, ice picks, arrows, etc."

True, it is way overrated, due to the way the movies show people with a light vest being hit by a .308 and getting nothing more than a bruise.

No, kevlar is not overrated for stopping stabbing attacks with knives. It flat out DOESN'T WORK. AT ALL. At least, not any better than a thick coat. Anti knife plates are a separate option, and different from ballistic plates for higher order firearm threats.
