Carnival of Cordite

Posted by David Hardy · 20 September 2006 11:50 AM

The Carnival of Cordite is up. I esp. liked the link to this story, on how the military is considering long-overdue replacement of the 5.56 mm with something more potent. The traditional assault rifle was optimized for the 200-300 yard battles likely to take place in Europe. We're now finding, while fighting in deserts and mountains, that longer-ranged firefights are likely.

While we're on carnivals, here's the Carnival of Homeschooling.

As a quick aside, it seems there is still unrest among the Democrats regarding the 2nd Amendment.

I think novelty drives the military, as it does most consumer interests. Every so often the services go through this hand-twisting and soul-searching. The .308 is still one of the best modern cartridges--preferable only because of length over the 30.06. If we must have a lower recoil round, then the Remington .260, a 6.5 on the the Winchester .308 case is a good bet. Ballistically, the sectional density of the 6.5 makes it one fine bullet for down range. I have an old Hodgen reloading "pamphlet" for an 6.5/.06. What a lovely round.

My $ is on the 6.8 remington round for the M-16, less recoil (than .308), all the knock down power!

thanks for the submission and link to COC!
