Clayton Cramer performs an interesting analysis of the question. The media, of course, has a vested interest in keeping people scared or angry (and thus watching TV or reading a journal) and so creates the impression that they are, just as it creates the impression that homicide rates are increasing, when in fact they have fallen by 50% over the last quarter century.
