returned from research trip and that night stepped on a diamondback rattler. Still inn the IUC but at least they have free wifi. Went iff morphine last night. Five rounds of antivenin, fourvials per round beforre blood coag normalized. Leg very swollen.

Update: could I have gotten a shot off? Heck, I never actually saw him, it was dark. And I think the whole thing was over in a quarter second... I'm not that fast!

Dude. I thought all you Arizonans wore snake boots.

Wishing you a swift complete recovery.
Take care David.

Posted by: David Young at October 18, 2010 06:59 AM

...Dammit David, my greatest fear is being bitten ! Get well, then get even. Kill every viper you can find.

Posted by: Dave D. at October 18, 2010 08:14 AM

Probably an assassin snake, bought and paid for by a movedown.orc-affiliated organization. Watch out for SEIU members in the hospital, heh, heh.

Posted by: emdfl at October 18, 2010 08:21 AM

Best wishes, counselor.

Posted by: CDR D at October 18, 2010 08:39 AM

That rattling noise means....back off. Wondering where you have been hiding the past couple of days. Glad to hear your doing better.

Posted by: 5thofNov at October 18, 2010 08:49 AM

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery, Dave.

Posted by: Cam at October 18, 2010 09:09 AM

Geez, Dave ... multiple scorpion run ins and now a rattle snake. Been bitten by a Gila monster yet?

I hope you get well soon. We all need you.

PS: How is the snake doing?

Posted by: Stephen at October 18, 2010 09:34 AM

Did the snake live?
PETA wants to know.

Speedy recovery.

Almost did the same thing in my youth. I stepped over him, heard "snake!" and did the high step for a few yards before looking back at him.

Posted by: 1idvet at October 18, 2010 10:22 AM

Hope you are better soon, Dave!

Are you having enough fun yet? Geez, man...

Posted by: Harry Schell at October 18, 2010 10:33 AM

Our little girl almost did that this spring when we were hiking. Then there was another one that scared the crap out of us when we were on the horses! There are a lot more snakes this year. I hope you have a speedy recovery!

Posted by: Cory Brickner at October 18, 2010 10:57 AM

At least you have the comfort of having gotten bit in a respectable place, the leg. Getting bit on the hand or arm is a sure indication of being a rookie.

Get well fast.

Posted by: denton at October 18, 2010 11:12 AM

Wow!
That must have been very painful.
I hope you get better very soon. And please be careful.
The Second Amendment needs every one of its defenders in fighting form.
Take care.

Posted by: Tarn Helm at October 18, 2010 11:23 AM

PETA will probably come after you for harming the snake when it bit you.
I do know people who survived with no long term effects. Best wishes.

Posted by: gene at October 18, 2010 11:32 AM

Best wishes on a speedly recovery. It's always humbling when nature reminds us how frail we actually are. Next time you're in snake country, consider using a walking stick. Gives you a little bit more warning.

Posted by: happycynic at October 18, 2010 12:19 PM

Been there, done that, so you have my sympathies.

If all goes well, you'll be able to put a shoe on that foot in a week, and residual pain-free in a month.

Posted by: Chas S. Clifton at October 18, 2010 05:10 PM

Oh, my! Get well soon. Hope you turned that rattler into a hatband.

Posted by: John Richardson at October 19, 2010 06:07 AM

They do say "Don't tread on me" ... now you know why

Posted by: Matt at October 19, 2010 06:43 AM

Snakebit? For cryin out loud, whatever happened to professional courtesy?!

Posted by: Joel at October 19, 2010 06:45 AM

Be well!

Posted by: Carl H. at October 19, 2010 06:53 AM

I stepped on one in the hills west of Parker Dam hiking to the Oasis.....I think I jumped about 6' high. I was lucky, he missed me.

Speedy recovery, thank gosh fer meds!

Posted by: harkin at October 19, 2010 07:20 AM

I thought all you Arizonans wore snake boots.

I'm pretty sure Dave wears sandals with business suits.

Hopefully, David, you popped a cap in that snake. Here's to a swift and full recovery! (For you, not the snake.)

Posted by: Kevin Baker at October 19, 2010 08:07 AM

Best wishes on a speedy recovery and hopefully no long term effects!

Posted by: Deb at October 19, 2010 09:06 AM

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Counselor.

Posted by: Major Mike at October 19, 2010 09:11 AM

Godspeed for a quick recovery.

When I learned about this, "DAVE HARDY 1, RATTLESNAKE 0.", I thought I'd see a photo of a dead snake holed with Arizona snakeshot.

Very glad to hear you're okay!

Posted by: Galtish bus driver at October 19, 2010 10:32 AM

So you hit a rattlesnake in the face with your leg?
Shame on you. I hope you're both doing fine. Have a good meal, and save some of the dark meat for me. I had canned rattler once. Tasted like canned food.

Tell me, could you have gotten a shot off if you had one of those anti-snake derringers handy? I thought not.

Posted by: Alan Korwin at October 19, 2010 04:17 PM

@Alan - Dave's normal solution for rattlesnakes involves a Thompson...

Posted by: James at October 19, 2010 08:45 PM

Get well!
