AZ allows limited CCW in alcohol serving establishments

Posted by David Hardy · 14 July 2009 01:36 PM

Story here. Governor Brewer signed legislation modifying the previous absolute ban on carrying in any establishment that served liquor (in any amount). Under the new law, a person could carry in such a place if (1) they personally consume no liquor; (2) they have a CCW permit; and (3) the establishment doesn't post signs forbidding carrying.

In the meantime, the governor of Tenn. just vetoed a similar bill. Strangely, the [UK] Guardian reports that he signed the bill. Say Uncle reports that the governor did sign a bill letting off duty LEOs carry in such establishments, "Also, note the press coverage. When it’s for police they refer to establishments that serve alcohol. When it’s for handgun carry permit holders, they’re all bars."

The Governor of Tennessee is an idiot.
Does he really think gun owners won't see the hypocrisy in his approval of OFF-duty police and his "finger in the face" of LAW-ABIDING, permit holders.

Especially when police officers commit assault-type crimes (beat wife, etc.) at a rate 8 times that of civilian permit holders.

Note that by strong bipartisan majorities, the TN house and senate both over-rode the Governor's veto.

A recent lawsuit sought a temporary Injunction against the new law (repeal, really), and a county judge did not grant it. There is a merits hearing in 90 days.

The hyperbole coming out of TN on this thing is quite amazing, given that 40 other states don't forbid carry in establishments that serve alcohol.

How long can these predictions of dire consequences, blood in the streets, "wild west", etc. keep up? You'd think they'd have no audience now after a couple strong decades of successful right-to-carry laws.

I suppose some will never learn, and never feel no shame.

TN's legislature did, in fact, override that veto, and the law took effect yesterday. There was a dinner held by an armed party in celebration of an all-too-rare outburst of common sense by a legislative body.

Two men armed with high-powered concealed semi-automatic handguns ate at a Ruby Tuesday in Tennessee. Brutal murder ensued. The families of the chicken and cow could not be reached for comment.

But I sure enjoyed my Triple Prime burger, and my carry gun enjoyed not being locked up in the car!

Actually letting off duty LEOs carry differently from the general population violates the equal protection portion of the 14th. There are no qualifiers, exemptions, or what have you. The protectio MUST BE equal for all persons. No groupings or special treatment allowed.

Well..everyone knows that off duty POlice DONT get involved in drunken brawls or pull their weapons while their blood alcohol levels are on the wrong side of .20 or beat up bar maides who cut them off. (maybe in Chicago but thats Chicago) There are more reports of POlice going strange under the influence than there are licensed citizens doing the same thing. So much has been made about this deal that somewhere there is a nut thinking about how much fun it would be to go into a GUN FREE restaurant and make it big in the news.My family and I wont be there because of the NO GUNS sign. But if one of YOU are there when the fun starts and you or yours goes Toes Up have a letter in your pocket advising your NOK to sue the arses off everyone concerned.
