It must really suck to be on the other side, part 352

Kurt Hoffman has thoughts. He notes the changes in the Brady rhetoric (using that term in its proper sense, persuasive expression). Right after the election: we kicked butt! We rule! Let's get moving! Today: slowly awakening to "we wuz screwed."

No offense to the Editor, but shouldn't that title read "part 4473"?

In most circumstances, I'd consider feeling some sympathy and pity for someone, or some organization, so down on their luck and agenda.

But having for so long read the shit spewed by the Brady Campaign/Handgun Control Inc./National Council to Control Handguns/Center to Prevent Handgun Violence ...

No way in hell.

Careful with the premature victory dances: As they say, "It ain't over 'till it's over."

There are at least another 3 1/2 years -- and maybe 7 1/2 years -- of upcoming judicial appointments, legislation, APA regulations, agency interpretations of existing laws and regs, speechifying, and other actions both subtle and unsubtle, with which the Brady Campaign's fellow travelers in the Administration and Congress can cause mischief.

Not to mention potential swings in fickle public opinion: just one nutcase with an imported AKS-47 purchased in a private sale at a gunshow who opens up on - for one horrid example - a preschool classroom, could do more for the cause of gun control than all of Helmke's press releases and blog posts every could.

My advice: No gloating. Period.

While I don't know if I have ever agreed with the Brady Campaign for Gungrabbing, they are right. As it turns out, there was a victory for 'common sense gun laws', like the repeal of the conceal carry ban in national parks. I hope we get more such common sense gun laws.

They now feel like I did during the Bush years. It sucks and hopefully they have 8 years of getting screwed like we did.

Agree 100% Zippy. Those bastards are probably on their knees praying for such an incident to happen.

Sometimes when there is a spate of gun incidents in a short period of time, I wonder if...

...Well, nahhh.... I guess that would be over the top.

Would it be? It makes me sad to say this, but I'm not so sure. Remember NRA "F"-rated White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's most famous quote, reportedly paraphrased from Machiavelli himself. "Rahm's Rule" is especially chilling to think about in our context:

"You don’t ever want a crisis to go to waste. It’s an opportunity to do important things that you would otherwise avoid."

Quoted in the New York Times, here:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/07/us/politics/07obama.html?_r=1
and here:
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/17/a-different-emanuel-for-one-church/

So I repeat: No premature victory dances. And no gloating.

Excellent advice, Zippy. I concur.

Their half dead media parrot just can't make it happen any more.

I prefer the Star Wars version: "Great shooting kid. Don't get cocky!"
