Gun and ammo sales
In the last three months of 2008, that's right, three months, Americans bought enough guns to outfit the Chinese and Indian armies, combined. Actually, that's just reflective of the NICS checks, which don't cover sales by private parties, and buys by CCW permit holders. There were also 1.5 BILLION rounds of ammo sold, which explains why I'm having trouble finding .45 ACP lately.
Hat tip to reader Joe Olson, who also points out that a large share of those firearm sales were of "assault rifles," which means it'll be hard to argue that they don't meet the Heller test of arms "in common use."

Yeah, I've been having difficulty with 45 acp too. I'm down to 60 rounds left, split between 4 manufacturers (MFS, Win, Rem, CCI). So frustrating not to be able to go shooting.

Even DCM is backed up with orders for '06 ammunition.
".30-06 LIMIT - 10 CANS TOTAL PER YEAR - Effective 10 April 2009. .30-06 LIMIT - 10 CANS TOTAL PER YEAR - Effective 10 April 2009."

That 1.5 billion rounds of ammo sold was based on the assumption that for every NICS check called in in November, there was a 1,000-round case of ammo sold. Kinda weak.

So, is this panic or foresight?

I was going to post this article on another site but without any citations in the article to back up the figures I decided not to post it.

David, with all due respect and believe me there's far more due than I have words to make that point clear.
I have been following this ammo thing very closely and have read everything I can get my hands on. Say nothing that I have an advantage of knowing a bit of what goes on, on the inside of a few of the largest producers of ammo in the US. Being said, I will not debate anyone on any reason that is supported or based on sales of that ammo in short supply to the free markets by supply and demand. I will demand and have many times and no one will give me an answer that is supported with facts: Where is all the Russian ammo? There is no Wolf, Hot Shot and Golden Tiger and the likes on the market. Try and find 7.62X39 for sale that doesn't cost more per M than the firearm itself.
The simple fact that imported ammo is no where to be found and Obama wants to ban reloading through the treaty scam. Supports that something is fishy in the area of ammo supplies.
Look at it like this, is ammo that is needed for self defense only for people whom have money?
btw/ anyone notice the prices on 00 buck at over a buck a round by the box and thats on sale.
I'm not going to play into this demeanor that we should be proud of ourselves because we are armed to the teeth. I want our folks that have a voice that is heard to demand that China ammo be allowed back on the markets to fill a needed gap in supply.

That is a good question. I wonder where the Russian ammo went.
