Pelosi may fold on Souder bill re DC gun laws
The DCist is reporting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may allow a vote on Rep. Souder's (spelling corrected) bill. Actually, the report is that she'd have vulnerable blue dog Demos introduce the same or a similar bill, and allow a vote on that.
Here's a more extensive report in The Hill. The bill would strike the ban on semiautomatics, allow residents to buy from FFLs in VA and MD, and (altho this is a bit much to hope for, and may be a reporter's error) end the registration system. The discharge petition filed by Souter (which would discharge it from the committee which is holding it and bring it to the floor) already has 164 signatures, of 218 required.

Um, minor detail... "Souter" is one of the Supremes.
The DC gun legislative matters, however, are being driven by Mark Souder (a 'D', not a 'T'), a Republican congressman from Indiana.

Mark my words: Pelosi will bite the towel on the gun bill. It's too important to the Democrats to not be on the wrong side of this issue. Blocking drilling is where they want to make their stand so that they can weaken the economy and try and fuel more discontent against Republicans.
The only problem is that all this is very public and Democrats are taking a lot hits on the issue. The gun issue is one that they find a distraction and a political loser. They will want this thing passed and gone as fast as possible for two reasons.
1. To not saddle themselves as gun grabber butt-plugs.
2. To pass it as quickly as possible so all the other idiots and rubes that make up the Democratic Party will forget their latest betrayal.

The new resolution has democrat support and is also backed by the NRA. It will save D.C. a LOT of litigation on an indefensible defense. Because the District will not obey the Supreme Court decision and order on DC v Heller, just let the Congress do its job and rein in the District. Woe be to any Democrat that does not support the U.S. Constitution on this issue. I say resolve the issue now, and then get on with the offshore drilling supported by 70% of Americans. Also, Chicago is about to find out what the theory of incorporation is and that the 14th supports the 2nd amendment. Same with San Francisco public housing and New York. Since when did politicians, groups and individuals start substituting their own laws, regulations and agendas for the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights? Disarming law-abiding citizens does not work. Only fools do the same thing over and over, expecting a different result.

The House may vote and pass the bill. But mark my words, it will not come to the Senate floor for a vote this year. Reasons may vary from "there aren't 60 votes to cut off debate" to "we've run out of time to consider new legislation so late in an election year," but I am confident this one won't get to the President's desk for signature. At least not until President Obama is safely in a position to veto it as violative of alleged "home rule rights of the citizens of the District of Columbia."
