Brady Campaign campaigning

Posted by David Hardy · 8 May 2008 03:46 PM

Against the Ill. Firearm Owner ID card. They want background checks in addition to the firearm permit, because the permit spans ten years. (I think there is a requirement, for a gun permit system to exempt the holder from background checks, that the permits not go beyond a certain time, or have a way to revoke if the holder is convicted of something disabling).

UPDATE: see comments. Carl in Chicago, who oughta know, says the ID cards are updated if convictions occur, and background checks are run for each sale atop them. If that's so, then Brady is campaigning only because they don't understand the law.

Sweet galumphin' Jeebus Crow, they're just never satisfied with anything.

Don,

You have to remember, in a perfect world nobody (not even police) really need a gun. Gosh, somebody could get hurt!

David, if I understand you correctly, you're incorrect regarding BG checks in Illinois. A BG check is required to obtain a firearm owner registration card (FOID). These used to be 5 year cards, but recently have been changed to 10 years. The state police issues them and new criminal convictions are (in theory) updated in their records and thus the cards are subject to revokation.

In addition to the BG check to obtain the card, anytime a firearm is purchesed via an FFL, another background check is performed. The wait period on handguns is 3 days, and on long guns is 1 day.

So yes, in Illinois we ultimately undergo two checks to purchase a firearm. Redundant, IMHO.

they're just acting like a cargo cult, wearing the suit of line item distinction that actual RKBA supporters, truly interested in the laws, might make -- they have to appear like they're taking place in intelligent discourse in order to be treated as though they posess any such alleged intelligence. common trait of the pre-agricultural "reptilian brain," we all posess this ability. we humans use it in social situations where we aren't quite sure how to act, because in those situations, we don't know what the f-- we're talking about.

A state issued license or card is only exempt from NICS if it is renewed every 5 years or less and before issued a NICS check must be performed.

If FOID is 10 years, then it is not and cannot be exempt from a NICS check during the purchase of a gun.
