Alderman lets gun registration expire

Posted by David Hardy · 20 May 2008 10:17 AM

From SayUncle comes this amusing and appalling story.

Essentially, Chicago imposed handgun registration, a requirement to re-register annually, and a ban on all new registrations. Over the years, a number of people have forgotten to renew their registration, and been informed that they cannot reinstate it due to the handgun registration ban, and thus lost their guns.

Now, a Chicago Alderman who voted for those rules let HIS OWN handgun registration expire. So he's quietly introduced a proposal to create a 30 day amnesty during which handguns can be registered, but only if (1) they were previously registered and (2) the registration expired during a certain time period, which strangely spans when his registration expired.

Just following the example set by Senator Feinstein..."Guns for me, but not for thee"

Arrogant idiots.

And as much as I like Second City Cop's blog....if this hadn't received public attention (such as today's Sun-Times), perhaps it would have passed, thus giving us extra ammo in our magazine (so to speak).

At any rate, I opine he's shortsighted because he's not calling for repeal, and elitist because he wants to law briefly changed to suit his personal predicament.

Plus one for 30yearprof's comment...

That, and he had the gall to tell the Sun-Times that "This isn't just for me, it's for everybody."

Yeah, Dick, because if you hadn't personally stepped on your own personal tallywhacker, it would have been your compassion and your deep concern for your fellow Chicagoans that moved you to act. Right?

Keep in mind Richard Mell is the father-in-law of the very anti-gun governor of Illinois, Rod Blagoevich.
Also, Mayor Richard M. Daley was quoted in the media as saying that he approved of Mell's proposed loophole.
According the Chicago Sun-Times:
"On Tuesday, Daley endorsed the idea without reservation. The mayor said Mell is not alone. A lot of gun owners have ignored the re-registration requirement and find themselves in the same predicament.

"A lot of people go back and forth to their summer homes ... A lot of people move their shotguns. A lot of 'em are bird hunters, gun collectors. ... They move 'em back from Wisconsin, Michigan, [other] parts of Illinois," the mayor said.

Referring to the proposed gun amnesty, Daley said, "It's one time [for] one month ... You want to have 'em register. There's nothing wrong with that ... People want to just register. A lot of 'em bring 'em back from hunting trips. So, why not?" "
