CEO of Brady Campaign resigns, citing stress of losses

ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU QUIT? For Gun Control Advocates, a Losing Streak in Congress

By Daphne Retter, Congressional Quarterly Staff
CQ Today
October 19, 2005

Congress may decide in conference to ease District of Columbia gun restrictions (H.R. 3058). The House will vote Wednesday on shielding gunmakers from liability suits (S. 397). And last year, Congress let the assault weapons ban (P.L. 103-322) expire.

It's enough to make a gun-control advocate quit.

"It's not an easy job to get up every day and duke it out with the gun lobby," Michael Barnes, president and CEO of the Brady Campaign and Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, said Tuesday, "but it's very important."

Barnes resigned this week.

He conceded that his side of the gun debate is faring poorly on Capitol Hill, but said that's not the whole lobbying picture. "In many states throughout the country, things are moving in our direction," he said.

It's encouraging to know that some of them are discouraged. We were on the defensive for so long. The offensive is much better.

Which should explain all the new states with CCW laws...

Yeah, I question his use of the word "many". Seems he had a hard time speling "five".

Loved his campaign against the Florida Tourism industry. Very entertaining.

Seems like someone has a hard time spelling "spell." This is exactly the kind of person I want owning firearms.

Oh my yes, of course, one MUST be a spelling bee champ to use a gun. Other requirements include owning a tuxedo, having perfect pitch, and being a touch typist.

I can burp out the theme to Jaws.

Sorry to lose him! I can't imagine they'll find someone THAT inept again.

But one can hope. :)

In the political arena its rare and refreshing to see reason beating the hysterics of the anti's. Celebrities on prozac may be entertaining but they are no good for our freedom. The Brady Campaign and Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence won't find a president & CEO as inept, they will find one even MORE inept. If they use the same logic in hiring as they do in their anti arguments.

**Oh my yes, of course, one MUST be a spelling bee champ to use a gun. Other requirements include owning a tuxedo, having perfect pitch, and being a touch typist.**

It's not the spelling accuracy he's worried about - its the attention to detail that bothers him....and me.....about certain gun owners.
