Self defender downs cop-killer

Posted by David Hardy · 14 June 2010 09:42 AM

This posting points to a memorable 1999 event which doesn't seem to have attracted much media interest (it happened in Phoenix, and don't remember hearing of it before this).

Phoenix PD officer Marc Atkinson was tailing a stolen vehicle and waiting for backup when he went around a corner and found its three occupants waiting in ambush; he had no chance, and they killed him.

A fellow named Rory Vertigan was in a car right behind the officer. He drew his Glock and emptied the magazine, wounding one killer and disabling their car. He then tackled the wounded killer as he tried to flee. Police quickly nabbed all three.

If I remember correctly this is the case where the officers chipped in and bought him a replacement Glock, since his was held for evidence.

Going up against 3 men, 2 of them armed, alone? I think his probably clank when he walks.

I remember the incident - and even in the Phoenix media, you had to read carefully to figure out what Mr. Vertigan had done. I think I remember one account hinting that he was some sort of suspect in the case.

Would it get different coverage today? One would hope so, at least in Phoenix - but elsewhere, maybe not - UNLESS the new media brought it to folks' attention and they were forced to cover it.

I remember this event...the article that I read was pretty clear. Officer was ambushed while following some suspects, and was shot and killed. An off duty security guard engaged, and shot and detained one of the men. Thats about all/how I remember it. At about this time, there was also a human interest story on the news about a man who got his CCW and was just a normal guy whose routine in the morning involved putting on a shoulder holster and semi-auto. Frankly I was surprised that both stories made the AZ news.
