Settlement in New Orleans gun seizures

Posted by David Hardy · 8 October 2008 10:20 AM

AP reports the case has settled. It suggests that part of the settlement is a permanent injunction against seizures in similar future situations.

UPDATE: Here's the NRA press release giving more details.

Not enough, better than nothing, but some people should be going to jail.

Agreed, not enough. There was no mention in the NRA release of any compensation to the gun owners who were unlawfully deprived of their Second Amendment rights.

I mean, this is a civil rights case, is it not? Shouldn't there be some kind of sanction against Mayor Nagin and the police department?

I'm the last guy to argue in favor of a suit like this being "about the money," but what deterrent effect does this have? All they're really required to do is comply with the law, which they should've done all along.

I guess I should keep my expectations low and be happy that we at least have an admission that the gun confiscation was illegal (though I note the AP article reports that the police maintain that they only confiscated stolen or abandoned guns).
