HSUS bids to become the umbrella anti-hunting group

Posted by David Hardy · 2 January 2008 08:41 PM

Story here. Humane Soc. of the US (which has nothing, zero, zip, to do with local humane societies that actually spend money on care for animals rather than on political causes) intends to consolidate with several, unspecified, animal rights groups.

Personally, I'd rather it spent its $112 million per year on ... care for animals. The real humane society here would, I'm sure, be glad to get a half a percent of that.

BTW, blogging may be a bit light until Monday. Gotta go out of town for a time.

I was on the board of the local animal shelter in the 1980's and I was sympathetic to HSUS at that time. Some of the other board members were hunters and one was involved with the National Rodeo Cowboy's Association. They all cared about the neglected animals that we provided shelter for. It's correct that HSUS has never had any involvement with providing shelter for neglected animals, but I used to think it was an important voice for animal welfare.

Sadly, I think HSUS has moved from being an animal welfare organization to an animal rights organization like PETA.

I've been an exotic animal owner longer than a gun owner so I've been fighting HSUS and PeTA longer than Brady Campaign, Daley, and Jesse Jackson/Snuffy Pfleger.

The trips down to Springfield, IL legislature to oppose stupid bills is reminiscent, however.
