NBC Nightly on AR-15s

Posted by David Hardy · 23 July 2007 04:31 PM

Right here. Must be hard up for "news," since the AR-15 has been on the market for 40 years, and Ed Ezell's book "The Black Rifle" has been out for 14 years.

I have no idea where gun control advocates get the idea (and this is quite frequently claimed) that a pistol grip is meant to make it easier to shoot from the hip (or why shooting a rifle from the hip would be a "military feature."). It's actually just an artifact of moving the butt more into line with the bore, so as to reduce rise from recoil. Move the butt up, and it's no longer feasible to have the handgrip part of it, so it has to be separated.

Hat tip to reader Eric Schultz...

Hehe, I shoot my SKS from the hip sometimes, just for fun. No pistol grip on it. Never hit a damn thing when shooting like that.

Hey, I shoot my M1A from the hip, no pistol grip required. If you stand real close to the barn door, you might hit it.

Lefties, raise taxes, fund social-ism and gun control. No one seems to know why, but it's all they know.

I believe that "fact" is entirely the result of the Rambo movies, and perhaps other movies from the 80s in which modern weapons were mixed with a "cool" looking way to shoot in a movie. Movies are all they go on, and often they're the ones making the movies.

Yeeeaaargh!! Excuse me, had to get that primal scream outta the way. These "news" stories that say such inane things always make my head explode.

So black rifles are "more dangerous" because the pistol grip enables firing from the hip, huh? I have seen and heard that claim made so many times, yet I have never seen anyone offer an explanation as to how or why "firing from the hip" makes the firearm more dangerous. I suppose because you have no chance of hitting what you're actually trying to hit?

They make it sound like the military use the rifle that way. The rifle is NOT "designed" to be hip-fired, any more than a Hyundai is "designed" to be driven at 120 mph - although you can use it that way if you really want to. If you don't put the rifle up to your shoulder and use the sights, you're not going to hit what you're aiming at.

I have also heard people use the D.C. "sniper" (total misnomer) case as an example of why black rifles are so dangerous. I suppose these people would have been much happier and more satisfied if the "snipers" used a boltie hunting rifle? Because that's, y'know, so much safer and less susceptible to being used to kill people.

That creep used an AR-15 because he had previously been in the military and that was what he was accustomed to. He knew how to use it, so that's what he used. Do these people honestly think that if the AR-15 had not been available he would not have just purchased some other kind of rifle?

The inanity, disingenuousness, incredibly fuzzy thinking and flat-out ignorance and stupidity of the liberal media, especially when it comes to firearms, never ceases to amaze and disgust me. It's like willful blindness - they don't know squat about guns and they're proud of it, yet they want to tell everyone how firearms should be regulated.

I have written to Ms. Myers, suggesting that it would be better for her if she would conspicuously consume large quantities of alcohol on camera while doing such stories. It is better for people to think that she is merely drunk, rather than ignorant or dishonest.
