Mike Huckabee on the 2nd Amendment

Posted by David Hardy · 21 July 2007 02:56 PM

He sounds pretty solid. (I'm not sure which party he's with, but he might be scouting for a VP slot, too).

I'm not sure which party he's with

Republican governor of Arkansas.

He is pretty solid. No money, though. Interestingly, he is from Hope, Arkansas. Sound familiar?

His slogan: "I'm from Hope, too. Will you give us just one more chance?"

Huckabee is the only candidate from either party to completely embrace the 2d Amendment (he GETS it) and the Fairtax too. That is why he has my early support.

Ron Paul is better. :P

Ditto on Ron Paul. Is is for NO federal regulation of arms (firearms or what ever comes next). Thomas Jefferson of the 21st century.

I will vote for Huckabee or Thompson. No one else.

Mickey Mouse could get my vote if neither of them are on the ticket.

My problem is that he's inconsistent on his positions. 2 examples from his webpages:
1 - He supports arms for self defense and right to life. Right to life is not just about abortion. Like VPC and the Brady Bunch, they have additional issues and a right to life amendment can put deadly force in self defense in jeopardy.
2 - Religion and marriage. It is written on his site: "The First Amendment requires that expressions of faith be neither prohibited nor preferred. We should not banish religion from the public square, but should guarantee access to all voices and views." But then, he supports a constitutional amendment to define marriage as a heterosexual pair only. To me that is bringing your personal religious belief into other peoples' lives. I've had a good 25 year marriage and personally believe that marriage between a man and a woman is what works best for most people. But I would no more support the marriage act then I would support one that defined marriage as only being between a man and a woman of the same race. Would you?

Of course Ron Paul has a purer libertarian vision of gun rights. He's a pure libertarian. He also has a smaller chance of getting elected that Huckabee does, so it is small indeed. furthermore, Rep. Paul believes that the Fair Tax is not a good idea to repalce the income tax; he would just do away with them all, regardless. He believes that we should withdraw from Iraq first the rest of the world shortly thereafter and allow our two oceans to defend us. That's a nice foreign policy decision in 1885, but not so sensible now.

Ron Paul supporters qualify as genuine kooks.
