Knew I liked Utah folks

The immediate results of the shopping mall shooting there have been a doubling in CCW permit applications.

" "The Trolley Square shootings was a horrific, historic, violent act," McConkie says. "People reacted in different ways. Many people wanted a concealed carry permit and people who had let their permits go dormant reapplied."
Firearms instructor Clark Aposhian says his classes, usually with fewer than 10 students, have swelled to 20 or 30. "Since the 13th of February, I'm teaching easily 150 a week."
Aposhian says he has been asked to train 45 employees from one company and even a large Salt Lake church group. He declined to identify them."

It nice to see the pendulum swing in the right direction. Far too often we see the errosion of rights, and a sort of give-up-itis by the people when tradgety or terrorism strikes. They are often willing to give up their rights for a promise, by our government of security and protection. So they can "feel safe".

Some, if not a lot, of the demand is from non-residents. Seems the Utah permit is recognized in 31 states.

Utah's law states the turn around time for a permit is 60 days but the demand is so high that currently 112 days is the norm.

I got my Utah permit about 4 years ago. The permit arrived in the mail in less than a week. The current demand will likely slack off in a short time and the turn around time will return to normal.

Most citizens who get a permit understand that they are not cops and don't run toward the gunfire, as cops are supposed to do. They carry their guns for defensive purposes and understand that life changing problems can result from using their gun carelessly.

As usual, the concerns of the police over the present demand for permits is probably unwarranted. When was the last time you heard of a legally armed citizen accidently shooting an innocent bystander in a public place?

My buddy Kenny was just gun-browsing in downtown Ogden yesterday. He came back with a report of a serious shortage of handguns in the local shops. He thinks maybe folks that haven't had guns before are scooping up the inventory.
