Sounds like he had enough sense on how to handle the weapon as well i.e. he didn't get and just start firing.

When I read that line to my father, he countered with a story about how two guys with guns had gone into one of the local bars to hold it up and the owner went after them with a baseball bat. Turns out that the owner ended up beating the crap out of them.
